Objective

Reinforce safeguards and reduce complacency by connecting safety behaviors to personal consequences and real-life impact.

Approach

Our approach centers on a combination of engaging interviews and dynamic b-roll footage to create an emotional, cinematic film that delivers safety messages through relatable storytelling.

The Brief

Working in energy comes with a high risk to safety. Even though this should come as no surprise to anyone working at ExxonMobil, repetitive, routine tasks are easy to complete automatically without paying as much attention as employees should, leading to incidents.

ExxonMobil needed to really communicate the stakes of working in critical environments, with a goal of pushing safety messages of Exxon’s Personal Safety Management System (PSMS) such as the importance of start-work checks, instead of doing them as routine and becoming complacent to safety.

In the past, there hasn’t been enough focus on truly understanding what happened to cause an incident and learning how they can improve the strength of their safeguards. Even with safety training and ExxonMobil leaders consistently reinforcing their safe work practices, it’s easy to drift back into habits of completing risk-involved tasks without considering all the required safeguards.

The “Moments That Matter” Guyana Projects Safety Video will set the scene for why ExxonMobil’s critical safeguards are so important, taking audiences on a journey through the Guyana Projects Safety Vision and building towards a finale that reinforces why safety matters… to get you home safely to enjoy the moments that matter.

  • ExxonMobil needed to reinforce the stakes of working in critical environments.

  • The goal was to strengthen awareness of Exxon’s Personal Safety Management System (PSMS).

  • Key focus: ensuring start-work checks are done with intent, not as automatic routines.

  • There was a gap in learning from incidents and improving the strength of safeguards.

The Opportunity

We needed a solution that would have a lasting effect on safety, something that doesn’t end up being disregarded the moment an employee goes back to their routine. We opted for a dramatized, emotion-led film that ExxonMobil’s team can connect with.

We built a visual narrative with real-world settings, and relatable casting to highlight the weight of the consequences of what happens when we let our safeguards lapse. We produced the film with a goal of touching ExxonMobil employees deeply, by letting them visualize the consequences of ignoring safety, so they can watch the film understanding that they can easily be the next victim of complacency.

The story was structured in three parts. First, a quiet and reflective beginning showed a worker starting his day and heading to the worksite. The film introduced subtle cues about his life at home to create connection. In the middle section, ExxonMobil leaders shared direct safety messages to reinforce key points. The film concluded with the protagonist arriving home safely, showing the value of taking the right precautions.

Strategy

  • Chose storytelling over instructional content to evoke real reflection.

  • Used real-world settings and casting that mirrored ExxonMobil’s actual workforce.

  • Delivered a message through consequences, what happens when safeguards are ignored.

  • Aimed for deep emotional impact, so viewers could see themselves in the story.

Story structure:

  • Beginning: Quiet, personal setup showing a worker preparing for his day.

  • Middle: ExxonMobil leaders deliver key safety messages, intercut with action.

  • Ending: The protagonist arrives home safely, reinforcing the reward of precaution.

This format gave us space to establish tone, share leadership voices, and bring the message back to the personal level.

The Campaign

The creative approach focused on tone, emotion and realism. Rather than making a training video, we treated this as a short film.

Our approach of cinematic-first storytelling would have a lasting impact on ExxonMobil employee safety, giving them a film that touches their emotion and raises the tension, without emotionally scarring them thanks to the safety messaging being followed by the protagonist.

We used cinematic techniques to build tension and hold attention. The visuals were grounded in familiar details, from family interactions to everyday jobsite routines. The cast reflected the real makeup of ExxonMobil’s workforce in the region. By setting the scene with relatable casting, we were able to capture the audience’s emotions to encourage reflection. This is a strategy commonly used in Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that successfully reinforces messaging and consequences to great effect.

The dramatic and emotional tone of the film allowed us to captivate our audience in a way that e-learning or posters wouldn’t be able to do. Frankly, you would have to be a psychopath to not feel the emotional impact of the film.

The Impact

The “Moments That Matter” film landed exactly where it needed to – with hearts and minds. From leadership in Guyana to field teams, the emotional weight of the film really resonated with our audience and opened important conversations.

By presenting safety through a personal and emotional lens, the film helped shift attention back to the reasons behind the rules. It is being used as a resource to help teams reflect on their habits and renew their focus on the behaviors that keep people safe.

This film will not only serve as a cornerstone of safety messaging but also set a precedent for future communications across all Guyana projects, aligning with the SSHE vision and project goals.

  • Viewed positively by leadership and frontline teams alike.

  • Sparked conversations and personal reflection about safety habits.

  • Helped shift focus from compliance to understanding the why behind safety rules.

  • Became a central resource in ExxonMobil’s ongoing safety messaging.

  • Will influence future safety communications across all Guyana projects.

Safety Dramas in Corporate Communications

Dramatized safety films are becoming an increasingly powerful tool in high-risk industries. When crafted properly, they go beyond standard training:

  • They create emotional connection. Employees are more likely to change behavior when they feel the impact rather than just hear the rules.

  • They increase retention. Stories with emotion are more memorable than bullet-point training.

  • They drive discussion. Teams engage more with training when it prompts real conversation.

Unlike static media like posters or presentations, dramatized safety films use tension, empathy and realism to mirror the actual risks of a job. These films remind workers that every decision has a consequence, and every safeguard has a purpose. Used effectively, they can turn compliance messaging into a human story of responsibility, consequence, and care.
