SLB Global: Hand Safety 3D Animation

Creation of an engaging 3D Animation to communicate a hand safety campaign and development other design collateral such as leaflets, Z-cards and HSEQ presentations to support the overall message.

CLIENT
SLB Global

OBJECTIVE
Create an animation that shows SLB Global employees the correct procedures that must be taken to avoid having a hand injury in the workplace.

APPROACH
We created a 3D animation and went on to develop design collateral to support the animation that could be kept on employees at all times.

The Problem

SLB Global are the world’s leading provider of technology for reservoir characterization, drilling, production and processing to the oil and gas industry. Working in more than 85 countries and employing people who represent over 140 nationalities, with this global presence comes a huge demand for in-depth HSEQ training for all employees and a constant need to improve their training tools to maximize engagement.

Maintaining a safe workplace in such a diverse, high-risk industry requires not only policies and procedures but also training tools that truly resonate with employees. SLB Global continually looks to enhance the way safety information is delivered, aiming to engage, inform, and influence real behavioral change across different roles and geographies.

One of the standout initiatives from SLB’s HSEQ team is their ‘Five For Zero’ hand safety campaign. The campaign emphasizes a simple but powerful truth: hands are vital to almost every task in the oil and gas industry. Injuries to hands are not only common but can have devastating personal and operational consequences. If workers lose the ability to use their hands, their careers, and their quality of life, can be severely affected.

Despite having clear rules and safety protocols in place, SLB recognized the need to communicate this message more effectively. They wanted to go beyond posters and presentations. They needed an engaging tool that could cut through the noise and connect with a global audience. That’s where we came in.

The Solution – A 3D aNIMATED Hand Safety Video

To meet SLB Global’s objectives, we proposed the development of a high-quality, engaging, and culturally inclusive 3D animated hand safety video. This would form the centerpiece of the revamped ‘Five For Zero’ campaign.

We began by working closely with SLB’s HSEQ leadership team to clearly define the communication goals of the animation. These were:

  1. Procedural Clarity: The animation needed to clearly demonstrate the correct hand safety procedures to follow in various work situations. From operating machinery to handling hazardous materials, the content had to be accurate, practical, and applicable to real on-site conditions.
  2. Cultural and Behavioral Change: Beyond showing what to do, the animation had to change how employees think about hand safety. Our aim was to support a shift in mindset, encouraging all staff—from technicians to supervisors—to take ownership of hand safety as a daily personal priority.
  3. Memorable Messaging: To make the ‘Five For Zero’ principles stick, we visually distinguished each of the five rules with its own identity. These icons and motifs were consistently used throughout the video to reinforce recall.
  4. Engagement and Discussion: We designed the animation to be not only informative but genuinely entertaining. Humor, stylized visuals, and relatable scenarios were all used to increase viewer attention and promote discussion among teams during safety briefings and toolbox talks.

The final product was a short, dynamic 3D animated video that captured the attention of employees across the organisation. It conveyed critical safety procedures through compelling storytelling and strong visual design, ensuring the message was accessible to both native and non-native English speakers.

IMPACT AND ROLLOUT

Following the success of the animation, SLB Global extended the campaign across various touchpoints. We developed additional collateral to reinforce the message and make it easy for local HSEQ teams to deliver consistent communication. This included printed leaflets, pocket-sized Z-cards summarizing the five hand safety rules, and presentations for use in training sessions and team meetings.

Feedback from across the organisation was overwhelmingly positive. The animation was praised for being both educational and enjoyable—a rare combination in the world of safety training. More importantly, it sparked meaningful conversations on-site and helped bring new energy to an essential safety topic.

By integrating visual storytelling with practical guidance, this project successfully contributed to SLB’s broader goal of reducing workplace hand injuries and reinforcing a strong, unified safety culture.
