ADNOC: Interactive eLearning

We created HSE eLearning modules for ADNOC, covering a number of topics for interactive training that can last up to 2 hours each.

CLIENT
ADNOC

OBJECTIVE
We needed to create high quality HSE eLearning modules for Behavior-based Safety (BBS) training that will enhance HSE performance across all areas of ADNOC and its group companies.

APPROACH
We created eLearning with a combination of 3D animated visuals aimed at a workforce from many backgrounds.

Topics were:

  • H2S
  • Life-Saving Rules
  • Offshore Induction
  • Ergonomics and Manual Handling
  • Driving Safety
ADNOC needed us to create high quality training material that is ‘best in class worldwide’. Our aim was to help ADNOC have one of the most well engaged, trained and developed workforces in the GCC region.
Approach

e-learning has traditionally been quite static and unengaging, our aim was to elevate it to ensure greater motivation and effectiveness from the workforce being trained. We based it on four key principles:

RELATE – INFORM – ENGAGE – ASSESS

We recognized that effective safety training cannot rely on just delivering information. It has to form a connection between the training content and the individual learner. That’s why we built our methodology around those four words. We wanted every module to include content that learners could relate to, that informed them clearly and accurately, that captured and maintained their attention, and that tested understanding at the right time in the right way.

Our design team worked closely with ADNOC safety leaders to ensure that every element was aligned with real-world operations. We studied how tasks were carried out in the field, the most common behavioural risks, and the pain points in legacy training. This insight allowed us to create content that spoke directly to ADNOC’s workforce. We didn’t want to create training that talked about safety. We wanted to create training that led to safer behavior.

The PROBLEM

Providing training to a multi-language workforce with differing levels of education and experience is always a challenge. Additionally, a workforce that numbers almost 250,000 means that training is often hard to deliver and is not consistent across multiple sites/group companies.

The traditional approach to CBT had created a low quality expectation from the workforce receiving the training. ADNOC’s safety culture, training methods and media were all being overhauled so there was a need for a step-change in the CBT training itself and the end result.

Employees were disengaged. The format was dated, the visual style was uninspiring, and there was minimal variation in how information was presented. Important messages were being lost. The workforce was being trained, but not necessarily being educated. ADNOC was fully aware that to achieve its vision of world-class safety performance, the training experience itself had to be transformed.

In addition, ADNOC’s operations span a wide range of disciplines, locations and environments. This added complexity to the challenge. Any new training would need to be relevant across a broad range of job roles, accessible in multiple regions, and flexible enough to be deployed on different platforms.

ADNOC operates one of the largest oil and gas networks in the region. Training content had to be capable of reaching thousands of learners without compromising on quality or consistency.

The Solution – a Powerful SET OF hse eLEARNING MODULES

Our initial aim was to take many aspects of the engaging content we had previously created for ADNOC and build on its foundations to create high quality training material that was ‘best in class’ worldwide. We wanted to enable ADNOC’s people be one of the most well engaged, trained and developed workforce in the GCC.

Using articulate, the #1 elearning creation platform, we started with producing an elearning module for one of the most critical areas of safety: Driving. The Life Critical Training Module on Driving Safely became the benchmark for the full program. This module was built from the ground up to feel nothing like a traditional e-learning course.

Each screen was planned to keep the learner engaged. There was a mix of content types: short bursts of text, clear and steady voiceover, live-action re-enactments of real incidents, simple 2D animations to visualize processes, and high-end 3D animation to recreate dangerous scenarios safely. This variety helped maintain attention throughout and ensured that key messages were reinforced in multiple ways.

Interactive assessment was built into the flow of the learning, at the end of each stage. We created short reflective questions after every core section to keep learners actively processing the material. Learners were not just clicking through to complete the module, they were thinking, answering, and reviewing their own understanding at every step.

The visual design was upgraded across the board. Typography, color schemes, iconography, and motion graphics were all aligned to ADNOC’s brand but modernized to reflect a contemporary and professional training experience.

But beyond the visuals and functionality, what made the project effective was the relevance of the scenarios. The situations shown in the training reflected real ADNOC operations. Drivers saw themselves in the examples. Supervisors recognized the language and procedures. By grounding everything in context, we made sure the message landed.

The Result

By transforming traditional e-learning into a motivating and high-quality experience, we have helped support ADNOC’s broader HSE goals and made a meaningful impact on workforce readiness and engagement. We successfully delivered a set of standardized and up to date computer-based training (CBT) programs each with a duration of 45 minutes to 2 hours, combining static, dynamic, and interactive learning for each topic with relevant and engaging visuals showing actual work incidents or environments to ensure they remain relatable and understandable by those receiving the training.
