ADNOC Respiratory Protective Equipment Training (RPE)

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Training Videos for ADNOC HSE

CLIENT
ADNOC HSE

OBJECTIVE
Develop a solution to improve Respiratory Equipment Training for ADNOC HSE workers

APPROACH
A set of training videos filmed in a studio setting with supporting on screen motion graphics

The Problem

ADNOC HSE team needed a set of videos that would support the RPE (respiratory protective equipment) training all employees on site are required to do. The videos would help workers understand how to put on, test and take off equipment safely without the need for classroom training.

The equipment training videos needed were for:

  • SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus)
  • EEBA (Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus)
  • General Respiratory Apparatus

What is SCBA?:

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) which is generally used for working in hazardous atmospheres where breathable air isn’t available in order to preotect workers from toxic gases or oxygen deficiency in confined spaces or hazardous substances such as H₂S.

They are worn as a backpack-style unit with a compressed air cylinder supplying 30-60 minutes of air, and a full-face mask for airtight protection.

What is EEBA?:

Emergency escape breathing apparatus (EEBA) is used for short-duration emergency escapes when air quality becomes dangerous suddenly, intended to be used when escaping to safety with a 5-15 minute supply of air.

They are portable and lightweight allowing them to be used in any work situation that come with the risk of sudden change in air quality such as a gas leak.

The challenge was to create films that would contain the most important aspects of using RPE, whilst still being engaging. Delivering visual training for ADNOC employees that is brief and exciting to watch, with real employees demonstrating the use of the equipment used on ADNOC sites.

The Solution – 3 clear respiratory equipment training Videos

SHIIFT created a set of three respiratory equipment training films explaining the use of respiratory PPE (RPE), that way users could select the video most appropriate to them without watching them all, each film focused around SCBA or EEBA or Respiratory Apparatus.

ADNOC has a wide range of nationalities, and it was important to keep the language and graphics are simple as possible. This necessitated the use of dynamic motion graphics to highlight the important steps when donning or doffing the equipment.

Features include:

  • Green Screen Filming
  • Use of real workers
  • Supporting on screen graphics
  • Multiple language versions

The videos were short and sweet, with direct instructions that can be understood easily by any worker in ADNOC regardless of what language they speak or what background they come from, they can now easily remember how to put on the RPE and understand what to and what not to do such as removing jewelry, spectacles, or having no facial hair.

The videos easiness to understand is achieved by universally understood graphics and iconography, along with being in a white limbo background which successfully allows viewers to have their full focus on the graphics and directions of the equipment training. With a slow and consistent pacing and not including voice-overs or dialogue to remove the focus from the animated graphics and actions taken by the film, the training videos are easily repeatable to watch and practice at the same time.
