The Problem

Vehicle accidents cost companies $60 billion each year in legal and medical expenses, property damage and lost employee productivity. More than 1/5 of truck drivers who were involved in a fatal crash had previous crashes on their record. Even within private fleets, which fare 3x better than the rest of the industry, accident rates remain largely the same.

The Solution – Driving Simulator in VR

To increase driver safety, SHIIFT created short, less than 15-minute immersive VR driver training modules. After each VR module session, each user is asked 5-10 multiple choice questions to test comprehension of what was retained during the VR training.

Training content included:

• Street skills
• Pre-trip checks
• Vehicle maintenance
• Yard skills

This training is a user centered experience. Every touchpoint is intuitive and easy to follow. Trainees are able to self-manage elements of their learning.

After beginning a module, the user is placed into the driver seat of a HGV vehicle (Or outside the vehicle for pre-trip scenario) to experience the drive from the position they would take as the driver in the real world. The user is immersed and feeling as if they are truly on the road in their truck, designed with Schneider colours for familiarity.

Throughout this process, the user goes through the driving process while listening to voiceover instructions explaining the correct process in each step such as the timing to use turning signals or the correct lanes to be in, and the user needs to make the correct choices or suffer the consequences they would face in the real world virtually, in a safe environment.

After a driver training scenario is over, the user is quizzed on what they’ve learnt, to make sure they were listening intently, and observing the dangers of the road. This quiz allows training staff to identify shortcomings of the user and gives the user an opportunity to learn.
