Oxy: HSE Induction 3D Animation

Three site-specific 3D animated HSE inductions built to onboard new staff across Oxy's site operations.

OBJECTIVE

SHIIFT was commissioned to produce a high quality 3D HSE induction video for Occidental Petroleum, giving new staff a consistent introduction to health, safety, and environmental standards before they begin work across the three sites.

APPROACH

Our team developed three dedicated 3D HSE animations, one for each site, fully scripted to Oxy’s requirements and standards and produced in English, Arabic, and French to suit the workforce across the sites.

The Problem

Occidental Petroleum needed a single, dependable way to bring new staff up to speed on site safety before they set foot on either of the three sites. A busy industrial operation needs an induction that stays consistent every time it is delivered, rather than briefings that shift from one session to the next.

The brief called for a high quality asset with a long shelf life, something Oxy could keep using as new people join rather than a one-off that dates quickly. It also had to serve a multilingual workforce, which meant the same content delivered cleanly in English, Arabic, and French.

Each of the three sites has its own layout and hazards, so the films could not rely on a single generic version. The induction needed to be specific to Site A, Site B, and Site C, while holding to one shared standard across all three.

The Solution

SHIIFT produced three site-specific 3D animated safety videos, each running around 10 to 15 minutes and built to reflect the real layout and HSE requirements of its site. Every film was fully scripted to the client’s standards, then taken through storyboard, animatic, and full animation, with multiple rounds of client feedback at each stage to keep the content accurate and on message.

Because the films were animated rather than filmed, we could model each site as a 3D environment and stage safety scenarios with full control, covering the life saving rules and core HSE practices that matter most before someone starts on site. The result is a durable, reusable induction Oxy can roll out to new staff for years to come.

The pROCESS

From storyboard to final 3D

Each induction started on paper before it ever became an animation. We scripted the full narrative for every site, then built storyboards and animatics to lock the pacing, framing, and safety messaging with Oxy ahead of production. Once the structure was signed off, those frames were rebuilt as full 3D scenes. The stills below show how key moments moved from early storyboard and animatic through to the finished animation.

Building the sites in 3D

The realism of an induction film rests on staff recognizing where they are. Working from the reference photos, plans, and documentation provided, we rebuilt Site A, Site B, and Site C as 3D environments, so each film walks new staff through spaces that match the place they are about to work. Modeling the sites this way also gave us full control of the camera, letting us frame hazards, walkways, and key areas exactly as the safety message needed.

One animation, three languages

The workforce across the sites is mixed, so a single language version was never going to reach everyone. Each film was produced with English, Arabic, and French voiceovers, all built on the same animation so the visuals, timing, and on-screen graphics stay identical from one version to the next. Whichever language a new starter hears, they receive the same induction, frame for frame.

Result

Produced in close partnership with Oxy, the three films give new staff a clear, consistent introduction to site safety from their very first day, and a durable asset the operation can keep using as new people join.
