The PROBLEM

Milestone Environmental Services, a key player in oilfield waste disposal, needed to overhaul how it trained and upskilled its employees. Operating across remote sites in the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, and Haynesville Shale regions of the US, most of Milestone’s workforce is field-based. These employees often had limited access to standardized training materials or clear paths for cross-training and career progression.

The company had no learning management system (LMS) in place, and this lack of infrastructure presented a clear risk to operational consistency and HSES (Health, Safety, Environment and Security) compliance. It also hindered internal promotion opportunities. Recognising this, Milestone’s executive team and investors prioritised the implementation of a scalable training platform as part of their broader employee development strategy.

The goal was to provide consistent, accessible, and effective training content for all staff, regardless of location. From new hires to existing staff moving into new roles, the need for structured onboarding and upskilling was critical. A strong orientation video component was considered central to achieving this.

Milestone were looking to cross-train their field workforce and set employees up for promotions within the company – a “Formula for Success”

The Solution

To meet these needs, a full series of 21 orientation videos was produced, forming the foundation of Milestone’s new eLearning framework. Content was grouped by department, with categories including corporate overview, safety, marketing, operations, sales, engineering, finance and HR.

Each module was developed in close collaboration with subject matter experts during a structured pre-production phase. The final videos combined live action footage, on-screen presenters, voiceovers, supporting text, and animation to deliver clear, concise and highly watchable training content.

This format ensured material was accessible and engaging regardless of location or job role. Whether a viewer was working in a remote facility in Texas or onboarding from overseas, they received the same quality of instruction and exposure to company standards.

The orientation videos were designed not just for initial onboarding, but also for ongoing learning and departmental cross-training. This supports internal mobility and gives staff a clearer pathway toward career development.

eLearning Delivery

The orientation videos were integrated into a new LMS platform, allowing employees to access training at their own pace from any location. The e-learning format ensured that onboarding and refresher training could be rolled out company-wide, without the delays and inconsistencies of in-person sessions.

Modules were structured for modular learning, enabling staff to complete relevant content based on role or learning objectives. This was particularly important for cross-training and internal promotions, giving employees visibility into other departments and functions.

The LMS also provided tracking and reporting features, helping the organisation demonstrate compliance, monitor completion rates, and identify skills gaps across its workforce.

Physical Video Cards

In addition to the digital rollout, Milestone requested that all training content be made available on physical video cards (also referred to as video brochures). These portable devices feature built-in screens and preloaded content, allowing critical orientation videos to be viewed without internet access.

This option was particularly valuable for remote locations and field sites where connectivity is unreliable or non-existent. It also allowed supervisors to distribute essential training materials directly to teams on the ground.

This dual-delivery method, through LMS and physical video cards, ensured complete accessibility, regardless of technical limitations in the field.

The outcome

The new orientation video series and LMS rollout achieved several key results:

  • Company-wide Consistency
All employees now receive standardised training aligned with Milestone’s HSES expectations and operational procedures.
  • Increased Accessibility
Training is accessible to employees across all locations and time zones, with no compromise in delivery quality.
  • Enhanced Engagement
By mixing video formats and avoiding traditional slide-based e-learning, the modules maintain user interest and improve retention.
  • Support for Internal Mobility
With clear content across multiple disciplines, employees can cross-train and prepare for promotion, directly supporting Milestone’s talent strategy.
  • Rapid Deployment and Scalability
The modular video approach allows for straightforward updates, expansion into new topics, and quick onboarding of new hires.

By replacing outdated or ad-hoc training processes with a cohesive orientation video programme, Milestone Environmental Services has taken a significant step forward in workforce development. The approach has brought structure, engagement and scalability to employee learning, strengthening compliance, supporting internal growth and unifying standards across the organisation.
