OBJECTIVE
Develop a lockout tagout training course to improve the safety of high-risk hazardous energy isolation procedures, that can be used effectively across several industries such as Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, Construction, Mining, etc, while following OSHA LOTO Standards.

Our LOTO Training needed to include the crucial, yet often forgotten ‘Tryout’ step of Lockout Tagout training, keeping up with modern industry standards, making it LOTOTO Training (Lockout, Tagout, Tryout).


APPROACH
A lockout tagout interactive training program designed as a virtual reality simulation (VR) for users to learn, practice, and be assessed on the lockout tagout tryout procedure in an immersive and safe environment. Elearning has been done before and VR is amazing for practicing high-risk scenarios.

The Problem – Ineffective Training Standard for lockot tagout

In industrial settings, the improper handling of energy isolation, commonly known as lockout-tagout (LOTO), is a significant safety concern. In 2023, control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout) was the 6th most cited OSHA violation with 2539 violations.

This has been a continuous trend with Lockout Tagout accidents being cited in the top 10 most cited for the last 30 years. On top of avoiding a maximum penalty of up to $16,131 per LOTO violation, OSHA estimates LOTO Compliance prevents 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries each year.

Accidents stemming from incorrect LOTO procedures can lead to severe injuries or even fatalities. Traditional training methods often rely on manuals, videos, or classroom sessions, which may not fully engage workers or accurately replicate the high-stress environments they might encounter on the job.

As a result of this, correct LOTO Compliance is often ignored by employees, and there is a gap in effectively training workers to follow the correct steps for energy isolation, ensuring safety and compliance, costing large sums of money due to OSHA violations, as well as risk to employee safety and trust.

Companies face the challenge of ensuring that all employees, regardless of their experience level, are adequately trained in LOTO procedures. Inconsistent training or lack of real-world practice can lead to costly errors, equipment damage, or life-threatening situations.

The need for an innovative and practical training solution is clear, one that can simulate real-life energy isiolation scenarios and provide hands-on experience, in a controlled environment.


 

The Solution – Lockout Tagout Training VR Simulation

Shiift recognized the need for a more effective and immersive training solution to address the challenges of energy isolation. To this end, we developed a Virtual Reality (VR) training program specifically focused on the lockot tagout process. The VR Training allows users to engage in a fully immersive environment where they can practice isolating energy sources step by step, just as they would in a real-world situation, without facing the high risk of a real-world accident.

The LOTOTO training program was designed to replicate a variety of industrial environments, each with unique energy isolation challenges. Users are guided through the correct procedures, with immediate feedback provided for each action. The interactive nature of the training means that users learn by doing, which has been proven to enhance learning retention and understanding of processes.

The lockout/tagout training program includes a testing module where users are evaluated on their ability to correctly perform all 8 steps of the standard LOTO procedure without any guidance from the instructions from the start of the course. This testing ensures that trainees can demonstrate competency in energy isolation, helping companies ensure that their employees are fully prepared to handle these critical tasks safely.

The implementation of the SHIIFT lockout-tagout tryout VR training program has led to significant improvements in training outcomes.

By using this training, companies can expect higher levels of confidence among their employees performing lockout taogut, a reduction in training time, and a decrease in safety incidents related to energy isolation.

By providing a realistic and engaging training environment, our training sets a new standard in industrial safety training for for hazardus scenarios. Using virtaul reality for high risk environments is one of the most beneficial use-cases of training in VR. We created two versions of lockout tagout training for two companies, using 3d models that are more suited to each company depending on the machinery used.

These virtual training courses are based on the most standard procedure for lockout tagout traning for a water pump, but there is room for more training modules to be developed for more complex lockout tagout proecesses in different situations. This customizability allows us to create future  modules tailored to companies by request after quoting for the custom development.
