BHP Billiton
OBJECTIVE
Our objective was to create a package of induction materials that are impactful, engaging and thought provoking to the target audience.
APPROACH
We focused on key messaging combined with a series of infographics and 2D character led animations.
Given the move to a new campus, BHP required an interactive Learning platform covering the full ranges of inductions required for BHP Billiton’s employees and visitors. BHP approached us for an engaging and interactive training solution.
Our objective was to create a world-class package of induction materials that was impactful, engaging and thought-provoking to the target audience.
They must have the ability to familiarize the audience with the campus and key considerations, within a relatively short space of time. Each film will be consistent in branding and messaging; and will be recognizable as being part of the same communication package.
With the transition to a new campus, BHP needed an effective way to deliver multiple induction programs to both employees and visitors. Traditional induction methods were time-consuming and often failed to keep participants engaged or ensure consistent understanding across different audiences.
The company required an interactive video solution that could present essential safety, access, and emergency procedures in a clear and memorable way. By using an engaging and modular interactive learning format, BHP aimed to streamline onboarding, improve knowledge retention, and create a unified induction experience across all campus operations.

We applied a modular approach to create an interactive video covering key areas including Driving & Parking, Visitor Passes, Emergency Alarms & Muster Points, Fire Alarms and Hazard Assessment. Each module combined 2D character-led animation, infographics and short interactive moments where users could pause and select responses directly within the video. While the majority of the video is in 2D, we also included 3D animation to showcase how the new campus actually looked in real life for parts of the video.
This interactive video format gave the overall output an engaging visual appeal and allowed a large amount of information to be communicated efficiently. At the end of each module, users entered a test zone with eight interactive questions designed to assess how much information had been retained.
What is meant by interactive video?
Interactive video is a form of digital content that allows viewers to engage directly with what they see on screen. Instead of passively watching like you would in a regular training video, users can click, pause and select answers or pathways within the video itself. In this project for BHP, the interactive video presented 2D animated scenarios where viewers could make choices and answer questions in real time, creating a more hands-on and memorable learning experience.
What are the benefits of interactive video?
Interactive video makes learning more engaging and effective by combining visual storytelling with active participation. It helps improve knowledge retention, ensures users remain attentive throughout the session and provides measurable feedback on understanding through built-in quizzes or choices.
For training content, interactive video is especially valuable because it allows learners to apply information as they go, bridging the gap between watching and doing.
The interactive video solution delivered measurable improvements in engagement and learning outcomes. BHP employees and visitors responded positively to the format, and the interactive structure helped them stay attentive and retain key information more effectively than traditional induction methods would.
Interactive video was the ideal medium for BHP’s induction requirements because it combined visual storytelling, audience participation, and measurable learning outcomes in one format. Unlike static presentations or standard video content, interactive video allows users to make choices, answer questions, and receive instant feedback.
This active engagement keeps learners focused, ensuring they understand site-specific safety requirements before entering operational areas. For a large organisation where safety and compliance are priorities, the use of interactive video supports consistency, accountability, and improved retention across the workforce.
