OBJECTIVE
Create three 3D lessons learned animations, including one focused on electrical safety and arc flash, to expand ADNOC Gas’s existing learning from incidents training series and prevent repeat accidents through clear, engaging visual communication.

APPROACH
To ensure consistency with ADNOC Group’s safety communication standards, we reused the same character models, PPE, and animation style previously developed for ADNOC Group.

Each video was designed as a high-fidelity 3D lessons learned animation, depicting real incidents with accurate root cause analysis, clear safety guidance, and professional narration.

Overview

ADNOC Gas operates at scale across critical infrastructure and energy sites, where health, safety, and environment (HSE) performance is a non-negotiable priority. As part of its commitment to maintaining a strong safety culture, ADNOC Gas commissioned three new lessons learned animations to add to its existing learning from incidents video series.

Each animation focused on a real workplace incident, including one involving an arc flash during electrical isolation. The goal was not just to show what happened, but to focus on how the incidents could have been prevented, reinforcing key procedural and behavioral expectations. The videos were created in four languages: English, Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic; to support ADNOC Gas’s multilingual workforce.

These 3D animated lessons learned videos are now being used to raise awareness, improve compliance, and prevent future accidents across ADNOC Gas facilities.

The electrical safety animation in particular focuses on an arc flash incident that had occurred multiple times on different ADNOC sites. This repetition made it clear that previous safety communications had not had the intended impact. The animation begins with a visual reenactment of the incident, showing the worker’s actions step-by-step, the breakdown in electrical isolation, and the moment of the arc flash.

It then transitions into a structured root cause analysis, exploring procedural gaps and behavioral missteps. The final section outlines the necessary corrective actions (the lessons learned), such as enhanced lockout-tagout training, procedure improvements,  communication protocols, etc to prevent recurrence.

The Problem

ADNOC Gas had experienced several repeat incidents across different operational sites, particularly involving failures in procedure and awareness. One recurring issue was electrical safety during isolation work, where incorrect or incomplete procedures had resulted in dangerous arc flash incidents. Although these events occurred at separate locations and times, the nature of the failures was similar.

These types of repeat accidents revealed a need for more impactful training, something that could go beyond technical documentation or verbal briefings. ADNOC Gas needed:

  • Site-relevant safety content that visually reenacted what happened
  • Clear explanation of both immediate and root causes
  • Instruction on how the incidents could have been prevented
  • Multilingual delivery for comprehension across all workforce groups
  • Visual consistency with ADNOC’s existing learning from incidents video library

By expanding the lessons learned animation series, ADNOC Gas aimed to proactively address safety weaknesses and reinforce compliance with HSE standards.

The Solution

We produced three high-quality 3D lessons learned animations, each based on a real-world incident reported at ADNOC Gas sites. These videos were designed to meet ADNOC’s internal safety standards while engaging both employees and contractors with realistic visuals, motion-captured characters, and clear instructional narration.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Real incident reenactments: Each animation began with a recreation of the actual event, including the site environment, actions taken, and how the failure occurred. In the electrical safety animation, this included a detailed arc flash incident caused by improper isolation.
  • Root cause explanation: Each video then transitioned into a step-by-step breakdown of what went wrong, highlighting procedural errors, communication failures, or human factors involved.
  • Behavioral guidance: The final sections of the videos presented corrective actions, what should have been done to prevent the incident. These learning points are designed for long-term retention and day-to-day application.
  • Consistent characters and design: To align with our other ADNOC safety animations, we reused the same character library, matching ADNOC Gas’s workforce demographics and approved PPE.
  • High-fidelity 3D animation: All environments, tools, and equipment were modeled accurately based on ADNOC Gas specifications. Safety signage, isolation panels, and control room settings were built to reflect real-world conditions.
  • Multi-language delivery: All three lessons learned animations were versioned in English, Hindi, Arabic, and Urdu. This ensures consistent understanding across ADNOC’s diverse teams and allows flexible deployment in different training formats.
Impact and Value

By focusing on recurring incidents and using real examples, ADNOC Gas created a more direct and memorable way to communicate critical safety lessons. These lessons learned animations enhance training effectiveness and support a proactive approach to incident prevention.

Key outcomes:

  • Stronger engagement and retention: By visualizing incidents and corrective actions, the animations help employees better understand abstract procedures and the consequences of failing to follow them.
  • Reinforcement of existing training programs: The videos expand ADNOC’s established learning from incidents series, adding depth and diversity to its internal safety training toolkit.
  • Greater accessibility: Multi-language delivery ensures all employees, regardless of language background, receive the same message with equal clarity and accuracy.
  • Visual consistency: Using the same design, characters, and animation quality as previous ADNOC safety content maintains a strong and professional safety brand across departments.
  • Scalability: The animations can be delivered during inductions, toolbox talks, refresher courses, or site-specific HSE training sessions, making them a flexible safety communication asset.
