Methanex: Custom Onboarding Video

A 6-minute onboarding video using interviews, 3d animation, and drone footage to communicate to stakeholders as well as investors and the local communities.

CLIENT

Methanex Corporation

OBJECTIVE
Create high quality project communications that showcase the G3 site, the importance of the methanol being produced, and company safety culture to function as an on-boarding video for Methanex employees and contractors.

APPROACH
The approach of our onboarding video mainly involved interviews, schematic 3D animation, live action video and drone footage to capture key aspects of the development over time.

Overview

Methanex is the world’s biggest producer and supplier of Methanol. Their Geismar 3 (G3) project development in Louisiana is an industry-leading plant with lower emissions intensity.

The G3 facility combined with the G1 and G2 plants, the three Geismar plants represent one of the largest methanol complexes in the world. We were approached by Methanex to create high quality project communications for the integrated project team including contractors working across the Geismar 3 site.

The Problem

Methanex needed a way to deliver consistent onboarding that would reinforce safety culture and ensure all personnel clearly understood expectations before entering the site.

At the same time, the company wanted the onboarding film to serve a secondary purpose: to act as a community-facing communication piece that could be shared with stakeholders and wider audiences, showing how safety was embedded into the project from the outset.

Audiences Include:

  • Primary – G3 workforce (mainly contractors)
  • Local Geismar community
  • Potential permanent G3 Hires
  • Local government
  • Geismar employees

The Solution

We created a high-quality onboarding video for the integrated project team, including contractors across the Geismar 3 site. The production drew on our established track record of successfully capturing and communicating major project developments.

Our solution involved:

  • Interviews to capture key safety messages and perspectives from workers onsite.
  • Interviewing key influential people such as craft supervisors to talk about the personal side of safety
  • 3D schematic animation to illustrate the area surrounding the site.
  • Video shots of other key Methanex employees (JF, VJ, etc.)
  • Utilization of pre-shot drone footage captured during key construction milestones

This combination ensured the onboarding video was both engaging and comprehensive, making it a central tool for safety communication.

Impact and Value

Methanex’s custom onboarding video had a strong effect in conveying the company’s safety culture and the video was overall very well received by the client as evidenced by a quote from Paul Bailey, VP Projects at Methanex Corporation:

“Myriad has contributed significantly to our goals. To date the Project has worked 6 million hours without a single lost time incident putting it top quartile in performance. The Myriad onboarding video was a valuable part of that”.

“Myriad is a professional company that has all of the right experience to support Major Capital Projects, they are easy to work with and listen carefully to a clients brief.

Paul refers to the team as Myriad because SHIIFT operates as a brand of Myriad Global. His statement reflects the project outcomes at the time, not the date of this publication.
